In 1876, a man named Alexander Graham Bell got a patent for his new invention - the telephone . Before this day, people wrote letters or used telegrams, which were very slow. The telephone changed our world, it allowed people to hear a friend’s voice from far away for the first time. In the past, only rich people had phones in their homes, and they were big heavy boxes on the wall. Today, we carry smartphones in our pockets to play games, watch videos, and talk to anyone. The telephone is one of the most important inventions in history because it helps us stay close to our family and friends every day.

The word of the day:  hang up (verb)/hæŋ ʌp/

Meaning: to end a phone call.

Example: He said goodbye and hung up.
