International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day

February: Voices & Identity

International Mother Language Day is celebrated to promote linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. The holiday was established by UNESCO and has its roots in events that took place in Bangladesh in 1952, when students protested to protect their native language. Today, the day reminds people that languages are an important part of identity, culture, and history. Many countries celebrate by reading poetry, learning new words, and honoring the languages spoken by their communities and families.

The word of the day:  mother tongue (noun)/ˈmʌð.ər tʌŋ/

Meaning: native language; the first language you learn from your parents as a child.

Example: My mother tongue is Ukrainian.
