James Joyce’s Legacy Day

James Joyce’s Legacy Day

February: Voices & Identity

James Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was a very important Irish writer who changed how people write stories in the 20th century. He is famous for using a technique called "stream of consciousness," which shows the deep and messy thoughts inside a character's mind. His most famous book, Ulysses, follows the life of an ordinary man in Dublin for just one day. Today, his legacy reminds us of the power of artistic innovation and the importance of looking deeply at the human experience.

The word of the day:  stream of consciousness (noun phrase) /striːm əv ˈkɒn.ʃəs.nəs/

Meaning: a writing technique that tries to show the natural flow of a person's thoughts.

Example: Reading stream of consciousness novels isn't easy as the sentences are often very long and messy.

     Your MINI-TASK:

Write your "stream of consciousness": e. g., “ Where is the coffee? The pot is empty. Empty like my wallet. I need milk..."

Can a day in your life be a good story for a book? Why?
