Rare Hobbies Day

Rare Hobbies Day

February: Voices & Identity

Rare hobbies have always reflected the history and culture of the societies in which they developed. In the Victorian era in the UK, for example, some people collected exotic plants and insects, showing their interest in science and exploration. In Japan, the traditional art of bonsai growing has been practised for centuries and reflects cultural values of patience and harmony with nature. Even unusual hobbies today, such as historical reenactment or extreme ironing, can express people’s creativity and connection to the past. Rare hobbies help us understand what different cultures value and how individuals express their identity through unique interests.

The word of the day:  rare (adjective)/reər/
