February: Voices & Identity
Levi Strauss (26 Feb 1829 – 26 Sep 1902) was a German-American businessman who lived during the time of the California Gold Rush, when thousands of people moved west in search of fortune and new opportunities. After immigrating to the US, he opened a dry goods business in San Francisco and began producing strong denim work pants for miners and laborers. In partnership with tailor Jacob Davis, he helped create the first blue jeans reinforced with metal rivets, founding what later became Levi Strauss & Co.. Today, his legacy lives on through jeans, a global symbol of durability, equality, and modern fashion culture.
