International School Meals Day

International School Meals Day

March: Change & Responsibility

School meals have played an important role in history and culture by supporting children’s health and education. In many countries, school meal programs began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to help poor children receive at least one healthy meal a day. For example, the National School Lunch Program was created in 1946 in the United States to improve child nutrition after World War II. Over time, school meals have also reflected cultural traditions, as menus often include local dishes and national foods. Today, school meals are not only about nutrition but also about equality, community, and teaching children healthy eating habits.

The word of the day:  canteen (noun)/kænˈtiːn/

Meaning: a small restaurant in a school where students can have their lunch.

Example: I usually have my lunch in the school canteen.
