У 2007 році Генеральна Асамблея ООН ухвалила резолюцію про те, що 15 вересня відзначатиметься Міжнародний день демократії. З моменту зародження демократії в Стародавній Греції тисячі років тому і до сьогодні основою демократичного суспільства є здатність його людей брати участь у процесі прийняття рішень своєю нацією. Демократія надає громадянам право приймати рішення щодо всіх аспектів свого життя самостійно, без тиску та провокацій.
