Before the Pumpkin Came the… Turnip!

Before the Pumpkin Came the… Turnip!

October: Ireland

Today, carved pumpkins with glowing faces are a familiar symbol of Halloween, but in Ireland, people traditionally carved turnips and other root vegetables.

They made frightening faces in them and sometimes placed lights inside to create spooky lanterns.

These customs were connected with Irish folklore and stories about wandering spirits.

When Irish emigrants brought their Halloween traditions to North America, they discovered that pumpkins were larger, softer and easier to carve than turnips.

Over time, pumpkins became the popular choice.

The word of the day:  carve /kɑː v/

Meaning: to cut a shape or pattern into a hard material.

Example: People in Ireland traditionally carved turnips to make Halloween lanterns.
