Samhain: When One Season Ended and Another Began

Samhain: When One Season Ended and Another Began

October: Ireland

Samhain was one of the most important seasonal festivals in ancient Celtic Ireland.

Celebrated around the end of October, it marked the transition from the bright half of the year to the dark winter months.

Communities gathered, lit fires and took part in rituals connected with protection, harvest and the supernatural.

People believed that spirits could visit the human world during this special time.

Samhain was not simply about fear; it was also a moment to recognise the changing seasons and the relationship between people, nature and the unknown.

Elements of these ancient customs influenced later Halloween traditions and are still remembered in Ireland today.

The word of the day:  ritual /ˈrɪtʃuəl/

Meaning: an action or series of actions performed in a traditional or ceremonial way.

Example: Bonfires were part of seasonal rituals in some Celtic communities.
