Why Did So Many Irish People Leave?

Why Did So Many Irish People Leave?

October: Ireland

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, millions of Irish people left their homeland in search of safety, work and a better future.

The Great Famine forced many families to escape hunger, while poverty and limited job opportunities encouraged others to leave.

Some travelled by ship to the United States, Canada and Australia, while many others moved to Britain.

Starting a new life abroad was often difficult, and immigrants faced hard work and prejudice.

However, Irish communities grew in cities around the world, creating new homes while keeping connections with their homeland through family stories, music and traditions.

The word of the day:  escape /ɪˈskeɪp/

Meaning: to leave a dangerous, unpleasant or difficult situation or place.

Example: Many Irish people escaped poverty and famine in the 19th century.
