The Great Famine

The Great Famine

October: Ireland

The Great Famine was one of the darkest periods in Irish history.

Between 1845 and 1852, a potato disease destroyed much of the crop that millions of people depended on for food.

Poverty, hunger and disease caused the deaths of about one million people, while another million or more emigrated.

The disaster was made worse by social inequality and the political and economic conditions of the time.

Families were separated, communities were devastated and Ireland’s population fell dramatically.

The Great Famine remains an important part of Irish memory and helps explain the country’s history of emigration.

The word of the day:  devastate /ˈdevəsteɪt/

Meaning: to cause great damage or make people feel extremely upset.

Example: The potato crop failure devastated many Irish communities.
