Life on the Aran Islands

Life on the Aran Islands

October: Ireland

The Aran Islands lie off Ireland’s west coast, where life has long been shaped by the sea, strong winds and rocky land.

People have traditionally built stone walls to protect small fields and raised animals in this challenging environment.

Irish, or Gaeilge, remains an important part of local identity, and visitors can hear it in everyday conversations.

Ancient forts, traditional cottages and handmade woollen clothing reflect the islands’ rich heritage.

Today, islanders combine these traditions with modern life, welcoming visitors while working to preserve their language and culture.

The word of the day:  preserve /prɪˈzɜː v/

Meaning: to protect something and keep it from disappearing or being damaged.

Example: Islanders work to preserve the Irish language and local traditions.
