James Joyce’s Dublin

James Joyce’s Dublin

October: Ireland

James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882 and became one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.

His most famous novel, Ulysses (1922), is considered a masterpiece of modernist literature. It is also famously difficult to read!

The entire novel takes place in Dublin on a single day — 16 June 1904. He uses a new technique- stream of consciousness.

With its experimental language, changing styles and complex references, Ulysses has become one of those books that many people want to own, but relatively few manage to finish!

The word of the day:  stream of consciousness /striː məv ˈkɒn.ʃəs.nəs/

Meaning: a literary technique that represents the continuous flow of a character’s thoughts and feelings.

Example: James Joyce used stream of consciousness to explore the inner lives of his characters.
