A Nation of Storytellers

A Nation of Storytellers

October: Ireland

Storytelling has played an important role in Irish culture for centuries.

Before books and television were common, people shared stories by speaking and listening.

Seanchaithe, or traditional Irish storytellers, helped preserve legends, history and local tales.

Irish storytelling often includes humour, mystery, heroes and the supernatural.

This tradition can still be seen today in Irish literature, theatre and everyday conversations.

The word of the day:  seanchaithe /ˈʃænəxɪ/

Meaning: Irish storytellers who tell and preserve stories, legends, myths and local history.

Example: Long ago, seanchaithe told stories about Irish heroes, magic and amazing adventures.
