English Politeness

English Politeness

September: England

Politeness is an important part of everyday communication in England.

English speakers often use indirect language to make requests sound softer and more friendly.

For example, instead of saying “Open the window,” someone might say, “Could you open the window, please?” or “Would you mind opening the window?”

People also commonly use please, thank you, sorry and excuse me. These small expressions can make conversations more comfortable and show respect for other people.

The word of the day: mind your Ps and Qs /maɪnd jə ˌpiː z ən ˈkjuː z/

Meaning: be especially polite and use good manners, especially by saying please and thank you.

Example: Remember to mind your Ps and Qs when you visit an English family.
