European Day of Languages

European Day of Languages

September: England

Every year on 26 September, Europe celebrates the European Day of Languages.

Europe is home to many different languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Ukrainian.

Many Europeans speak more than one language, and learning languages helps people communicate, travel and understand other cultures.

English has an important role because it is widely used as a common language between people from different countries.

However, learning other languages is also a way to discover new ideas, traditions and ways of thinking.

The word of the day:  polyglot /ˈpɒl.i.ɡlɒt/

Meaning: a person who can speak, read, or understand several languages.

Example: Maria is a talented polyglot who can speak five languages fluently.
