1066 and William the Conqueror

1066 and William the Conqueror

September: England

In 1066, England was changed forever when William, Duke of Normandy, invaded England and defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings.

William became known as William the Conqueror and introduced Norman rule.

The new rulers built castles across England to control the country and brought many Norman traditions with them.

The Norman Conquest also had a huge influence on the English language.

English began to borrow many French words, especially words connected with government, law, food and culture.

This is one reason why modern English has words from both Germanic and French origins.

The word of the day:  battle /ˈbætəl/

Meaning: a fight between armies

Example: Many soldiers died in the battle, but William's army won.
