The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London

September: England

In September 1666, a terrible fire started in a small bakery on Pudding Lane in London.

The fire spread quickly because many buildings were made of wood and stood very close together.

It burned for four days and destroyed a large part of the city, including thousands of homes.

After the fire, London had to be rebuilt. New buildings were often made from brick and stone, and the city became safer and more organised.

The Great Fire became an important event in London's history.

The word of the day:  burn down/ˌbɜː rn ˈdaʊn/

Meaning: to destroy something completely by fire.

Example: The Great Fire of London burned down thousands of houses in 1666.
