The Bandura

The Bandura

August: Ukraine

The bandura is one of Ukraine’s most iconic musical instruments, combining the qualities of both a lute and a harp.

Historically, it was played by wandering blind musicians called kobzars, who traveled from village to village singing epic poems about freedom and courage.

With up to 60 strings, the bandura produces a gentle, bright sound that feels both majestic and deeply emotional.

Today, young musicians continue to play this classical instrument, using it not only for historic ballads but also for jazz, pop, and modern experimental music.

The word of the day:  string instrument /ˈstrɪŋ ˌɪnstrəmənt/

Meaning: a musical instrument that produces sound when its strings are plucked, strummed, bowed, or struck.

Example: The bandura is a traditional Ukrainian string instrument with many strings and a beautiful sound.

Interesting fact: Sting heard the sound of the Ukrainian bandura - and was deeply moved. link
