World Whale and Dolphin Day

World Whale and Dolphin Day

July: Movement & Journeys

World Whale and Dolphin Day is a day to protect whales and dolphins, which are intelligent and social sea animals. Many of these animals are in danger because of pollution, climate change, and hunting. This day started in 1986 when the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. People celebrate by learning about marine life and supporting conservation projects. Whales and dolphins are important for ocean ecosystems, and protecting them helps keep the oceans healthy.

The word of the day:  pod (noun)/pɒd/

Meaning: a group of sea mammals such as whales or dolphins.

Example: The pod of whales moved smoothly through the ocean.
