George Orwellʼs Legacy Day

George Orwellʼs Legacy Day

January: The Power of Ideas

George Orwell (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950) was a famous British writer who lived during a difficult time in history when powerful dictators controlled many countries. Because he fought in the Spanish Civil War and experienced being poor, he wrote books like Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four to warn people about the dangers of totalitarianism. Today, his legacy reminds us to protect our freedom, seek the truth, and fight against injustice.

The word of the day:  Orwellian (adjective) /ɔː rˈwel.i.ən/

Meaning: describes a government which watches and controls everything you do.

Example: Some people think that having security cameras everywhere is a bit Orwellian.
